About us
Who we are
EITHAR is a volunteer civil society organization for women in Kuwait and the GCC countries. We stand for the advocacy of women’s rights and the prevention of violence against women. Eithar aims to promote the provision of legal, social and economic measures to protect all women from all types of violence.
EITHAR is dedicated to the specific cause of ending gender-based violence as a social, economic and legal practice by raising awareness, lobbying MPs, and working alongside NGO’s and CSO’s with similar goals. Eithar aims to:
. Advocate for the importance of advocacy
. Fight for the amendment of unconstitutional laws that exist that directly harm women
. Fight for the addition of laws that protect women
. Create public and private shelters
. Protect victims of abuse
. Educate various stakeholders by providing data driven and informed trainings to deal with violence against women and the oppression of women
EITHAR was created as a response to a real need for resources for survivors of abuse. There is no domestic violence prevention law in Kuwait, and a serious lack in shelters, hotlines, and trainings for abuse victims. We believe that we can bridge the divide in service provision between the public and NGO sector, especially in raising awareness, and in holding informed trainings, and in engaging policy makers to cover this forgotten demographic in their legislation amendments.
Everyone has to be educated about gender-based violence and the warning signs associated with abuse, because this is a community issue and not a gender specific issue. Also, this is a community project because victims need advocates, and the country needs dedicated studies, civil society engagement, and a rethinking of the education curriculum. Keeping policymakers informed of the realities on the ground is a joint responsibility and we believe that EITHAR can be a positive contributor to this cognitive change.
What we do
EITHAR has started working with policymakers and primary engagers in the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Social Affairs to gather valuable information to help fine tune our outreach and training offerings. We want to focus on outreach between NGOs and policy-makers and develop a Kuwait-specific training workshop for advocates and those who will provide primary care.
